January ProgBlog #2: I cannot help myself.

As I’ve mostly been working on characters and outfits recently (or more specifically one character and one outfit) there hasn’t been a lot of room for the usual extremely dodgy looking and usually very random views that can come up when modelling humans. Or so I thought.

I forgot to “apply base” on the multires sculpt before I started making the shirt so I actually made the shirt on top of the default proportions instead of the character’s proportions (a lot bigger) and inadvertently turned her into an adult movie actor.

I then spent an inordinate amount of time pulling the shirt out and trying to resquare everything.

It was very slow going because after doing a lot of the initial dragging out with the sculpt brushes I ended up having to switch back to edit mode to pull some stubborn ones that weren’t reacting to the draw brush how I wanted (there is a grab brush in sculpt mode that I would normally use but I forgot to test it out in this version; in previous versions it would occasionally make vertices go out of symmetry which I did not want to deal with right then) and it was incredibly mind numbingly boring and tedious so of course I wanted it to be done without having to do it but whatever. Didn’t help that I was really mad at myself because if I’d remembered to press the stupid button at the outset before I started on the shirt I would be well onto the pants and jacket and would not have to be somewhat repeating work yet again. I alleviated it a little bit by bouncing back and forth between the outlines I’m trying to get done before term starts (severe time crunch happening there).

I’m most of the way through the second apparatus and still have four more to do after this aaaaaahhhhhhh. I also really, really, really need to get some other stuff prepared really, really, really soon if I want to be anywhere near ready for start of term and once again it feels like things just keep piling up. At least the kids being older now has helped in a lot as the two currently without licenses can get themselves to and from things by public transport if I’m unable to help them out, and the one with a license also helps out when able.

Once all the shirt vertices were outside of the body where they were supposed to beI did eventually manage to get the shaping and smoothing done really quickly back in sculpt mode.

Could have done better on all counts but at this stage some progress is better than none.
