October ProgBlog #1: expediating
posted on: Monday, 27 October 2025 @ 11:29pm inAfter struggling forever with the shape keys for Red’s retractable claws, possibly against my better judgement (for once I’m not actually sure, I might have been going with my better judgement and against my glitches) I decided to deal with it when I got to the first scene where he has his claws out and move on to the next character.
As it was a minor character I didn’t spend a whole lot of time on the sculpt (which I bumped up to subd level 1 purely because the character appears twice), colouring was nice and quick and then I tried a different way of styling the hair.

It almost worked but I had the issue of everything looking fine in the viewport

but the render not behaving.

I have had this problem before but I don’t remember how I resolved it and am genuinely concerned it was delete it and start again as this is going to present problems for reusing any hair objects between characters.
Meanwhile I fixed that particular one by stuffing in another hair curve where the gap was and moved on to eyes and eyelashes which is always fun on a blonde character.

Just need to do the one outfit for this one and then I’m ready to move on to the next thing (which should probably be props and sets so I can at least try to render something other than characters in space I guess). I didn’t get a lot done over the weekend as there was one night of catching up with my parents before they fly home and a couple of nights of my brain shutting down and me literally wasting two nights on stupid phone games and angsting about whether it was worth continuing as even though I’m basically doing it because I find it fun it’s still extremely depressing to know that no matter what I am never going to be able to finish any of it now.
