October ProgBlog #1: hairy frustrations

haaaaaaaaaaaaair

Now that I’ve got a hang of it, this bit is going pretty well and relatively quickly (and is also somewhat meditative at best and mind numbingly, agonisingly tedious at worst).

Placing curve hair guides on a model in Blender 4.2

I feel like this is probably a bit overkill but it is mostly working. The first few times I was doing test renders I couldn’t work out why the lighting was so weird and eventually cottoned on to the hairs being too thick. Once that was fixed it looked a lot better but this other problem that I have persisted and that’s a flare I don’t fully understand happening at some point in the render.

My guides look like

and with everything turned on it looks like

curve guides with interpolate and blend modifiers on in Blender 4.2

and then I render and for whatever reason the hairs just want to flare out.

There’s probably a checkbox or something somewhere but I can’t find it.

It’s annoying me a lot but on the bright side at least with even a partially animated comic I can probably fix most of it in post if it doesn’t fix itself in the meantime.

sketchies

In very vaguely related news I managed to somewhat fix up a few life and scheduling dramas including a very long standing sleep issue (being that I wouldn’t because ain’t nobody got time for that, the weirdly easy “hack” was just to write on my calendar that I needed to read at 10pm which required going to bed as that’s where I read, and if I run overtime I just use the reading time and still manage to go to bed not too late) and I managed to convince myself to start drawing in this cute little book I got ages ago.

I bought one for myself and one for 17yo, there was this not-very-epic battle about who should get which as both of us wanted the trisquel one but I ended up with it as I’d bought them

Given the purpose of this particular exercise they’re not worth their own art posts so I’ll probably keep tacking a selection of them onto the ends of the progblogs just for something different.

15yo was watching me draw the last one and good-naturedly giving me a hard time for having a bad memory because it didn’t occur to him that I don’t look at his violin as often as he does.

he offset it by saying he had a lot of admiration for people who could just draw things as he struggles

If nothing else it will provide enough “filler” that I’ll feel motivated to post anyway on the days where I just don’t because I don’t feel like enough prog has been made (or in some cases where none has been made because things keep overrunning my work times).
