January ProgBlog #1: New World, New Start
posted on: Monday, 5 January 2026 @ 11:41pm inVaguely following along from the title of last year’s silly season shenanigan. These Blender versions are going way faster than I’m capable of.
Last year (and possibly the year before that as well, just less recognised/acknowledged for whatever reason) there was some cyclical ridiculousness of trying to get things finished, either failing anyway or succeeding but at the cost of being much further behind on other things or being unable to finish them (major problem in the case of lesson plans!), and then rushing through trying to get those things finished, usually failing because there wasn’t enough time to do them in, and way too often sacrificing sleep as that was the only thing left that I could take time away from, and then having meltdowns because I was overtired and no matter what I did or how hard I worked or how carefully I planned, nothing ever got done anyway. I think it was mostly my useless excuse for a brain desperately wanting to work how it works best, as I know that when I can hyperfocus on something I can get an incredible amount done in the 8-12 hours that particular zone requires. Alas, alack, I need to pretend I’m a functional adult, and my poor brain will never get to operate in its optimal methodology ever again.
After finishing the shenanigan, I launched into my usual planning phase (trying to actually finish this year’s program so I actually do drill progressions properly, I was doing way too much guesswork last year as well as trying to organise around as many of the things I’m aware of happening and needing to happen etc) and part of that was really trying to stick to my timeblocks. Strangely, I started getting stuff done. Nowhere near how much I wanted but some is better than none.
Yesterday and today it was this long sleeved button up shirt which will get buttons later if I put it on a character where the buttons actually show (this character is going to have a jacket over the top and only the cuffs will have buttons as that’s what will show a little bit probably).
I do not like edge modelling and I am probably spending way too much time trying to get the quads as squarish as possible but my limited experience with cloth sim has indicated that’s the better way to do things. It will probably be a similar deal if I just use the cloth sculpt brush instead of running sims seeing as I’m mostly doing a comic.
While I was on a recent road trip (not quite over Christmas) I decided to try the #dailyphoto thing mostly to slow my brain down. There was a bit of a sputter start to it as I overthink everything and literally all I need to do with a daily photo is aim my phone at something and press the freaking button. It’s meant to be a much quicker and easier way of hitting the brakes than sketching (which is relaxing for the most part but occasionally does send me into another depressive spiral of not good enough) and definitely much easier to maintain.
I downloaded Snapie while still on the aforementioned road trip with the extremely vague aspiration of maybe trying something new, like dropping the super quickie sketchies or these attempts at daily photos or the quick snapshots of my very scattered mending and patchwork projects; all those things I didn’t want to dedicate a hive post to (and by extension just ended up not doing on my blog either because I crosspost almost everything if not actually everything) and keep thinking maybe I’ll do a weekly or monthly post with them in it but never get around to it. There was also a bit of angst about why would I post it who cares it’s not interesting to anyone but me, and then remembered that I’m not marketing and it doesn’t matter, it’s just fun.
I still haven’t done anything with that because I have first post paralysis.
